Hazardous Materials Specialist


Performduties related to hazardous materials use, handling, retention, distributionand disposal. Ensures that appropriate SDS training, posting and replacement,as well as other resources for chemical awareness are available, current, andcommunicated effectively to users and others who may have direct or indirectexposure. Actively participate in safety training programs, including theproper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Perform routine and assignedwork as a Hazardous Materials Specialist.

Conduct site and facilities inspections.Prepare safety and hazardous waste discrepancy reports. Serve as firstresponder to hazardous spill and other emergencies. Serve as the “on-call”first responder and able to respond to a call-out within one (1) hour to thelocation. Take action to suspend work activities when hazardous activities arenoted. Perform follow-up inspections to confirm observed safety discrepanciesor non-compliance with specific safety precautionary guidelines have beenrectified. Perform surveillance relatedto hazardous material abatement program and maintain the Hazard Abatement Log. Capableof performing limited abatement work (up to 100 square or linear feet) insupport of maintenance activities. May conduct and/or support accident/injuryinvestigations. Review incident reports and coordinate reporting and emergencytreatment with internal and external emergency services as required.Participate in disaster preparedness planning and exercises. Monitor greenwaste and composing operations, as well as participate in soil and water testingand analysis.


Education : Minimum AA or relatedtechnical school; BA/BS desired.

Experience : 2 years in safetyrelated field plus 3 years directly related experience.

Certifications : Certified Asbestos Technicianand/or Certified Lead Worker desired.

Training : CPR/First Aid/AEDcertified, valid driver’s license, Hazmat Specialist certified. Hazardous MaterialsIndustrial Technician (HMIT, certified), Class A license is required for thisposition and must be presented upon hire or obtained by the end of the 90-day probationaryperiod. Upon hire, Jacobs will provide specific training in confined spaceentry, fall protection authorized user, hoisting and rigging, flagger, ladder safety,aerial lifts, and other courses required for the position.

Skill Requirements : Demonstratedtechnical competence in safety, OSHA, Hazmat training as well as the regulationsapplicable to general industry and construction safety. Evidence of workingwith and functioning as part of a team. Able to operate various types of heavyequipment; forklifts, loaders, backhoe, commercial truck, boom lift, scissorlift. Computer skills in MS Word and Excel. Excellent written and oralcommunication skills.

WorkEnvironment: The Hazmat Specialist will perform approximately20% of their duties indoors (Industrial, Shop, Research facility, Office) and 80%outdoors. Outdoor work activities may take place during inclement weather, orin areas with high or low temperatures. The work environment may involvesignificant noise hazards, confined space entry requirements and work atheights.
