Your Impact:

A. FUNCTION OF POSITION

A STAR labs engineering technician will support the machining and assembly of material test models and other components.The technician will also support model and instrumentation fabrication and assembly.

B. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Use basic powered and manual shop equipment such as band saw, disc sander, drill press, manual lathe, and manual mill.

  2. Setup and operation of CNC mills and lathes.

  3. Interpret engineering drawings, cut rough stock, independently design and machine fixtures to machine hardware, and set up tooling.

  4. Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in small teams is a must.

  5. Able to juggle multiple projects often sidelining some projects to expedite others.

  6. Overtime may be required.

  7. Support instrumentation and model assembly.

C. NATURE OF POSITION CHALLENGES

The employee may be juggling multiple projects at a time with varying deadlines. There may be cases where a project must be sidelined for a more urgent project. Some projects may be cancelled mid work. The employee may be required to communicate with requestors (customers) to clarify the requirements of the work. Occasionally requestor will want to be present when the hardware is being machined or fabricated. The employee should be comfortable with imperial and metric units. There may be cases imperial and metric units will be used on the same design.

D. SUPERVISOR GUIDANCE

General guidance shall be provided by the STAR Labs Supervisor. The employee will report to a lead senior machinist for direct guidance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position

Visual and physical contact with test system hardware and installed test articles. Multiple workstation assignments (office, test facility, control room, laboratory, shops, etc.). Transportation of notebooks, clothing/equipment drawings, forms, sensors, etc. required. Ability to hear normal (wearing) conversation. One eye (minimum) correctable to 20/20. Ability to distinguish eight colors on basic panel displays and wiring. Ability to manipulate small and delicate instruments and wiring.

Description of Work Environment

Work is accomplished in the STAR Labs shops and offices. Movement is required between these work areas as well as trips to the client or user's facility. Must be able to use respiratory temperatures involved protection. Some work areas are high in noise.

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks

Hand and power tools; computers; calculators; CNC mills and electronically/battery operated lathes; ladders.

Criticality of Attendance

Work assignments are usually during normal work hours (0630 - days 1600). 40hrs/wk. A regular attendance schedule is required. The lab works a compressed schedule where every other Friday is an off day. The other Friday will conclude at 1500.

Other Essential Functions

Must be able to obtain a NASA badge and gain access to the work facilities.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Preferred experience of a minimum of 5 years.

AS degree preferred, but not required.

Preferred, but no required, experience with the following:

• SurfCAM

• HAAS mills, lathes, and the Mini Mill

• SoildWorks (basic familiarity such as being able to open drawings, evaluate solid models, and make minor edits)

Experience with basic powered and manual shop equipment such as band saw, disc sander, drill press, manual lathe, and manual mill.
