Client Overview

The current Jacobs Framework supports the client in the following Discipline Areas:

  • Project Management

  • Project Engineering

  • Quality Management & Engineering

  • HSE Management & Engineering

The client owns and operates 8 nuclear, 2 coal and 1 gas-fired power stations, plus gas storage facilities, renewable assets and two administration offices. The coming together of the coal, gas and renewable assets with nuclear stations makes it the largest electricity supplier by volume and the biggest generator of low carbon electricity in Britain, providing 25% of the UK’s total electricity.

Role Overview

This Project Engineer post is required to support works undertaken across a range of projects being delivered by Investment Delivery (ID) at Heysham2 nuclear power station during 2019 & beyond.

The candidate should have good leadership qualities, be highly motivated, well organised and capable of working within a closely knit team. They need to be able to respond well to the demands of working in the environment of a nuclear power plant.

Essential traits - being able to communicate, build relationships, be proactive and be part of a team. Success in the role will depend on a flexible working approach.

Project(s) in Scope: various (estimate of annual portfolio value £17M)

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Identifying project requirements.

  • Authoring/reviewing/verifying commissioning strategies and procedures.

  • Oversight of contractors executing field works, from a safety, quality and technical perspective.

  • Authoring/reviewing/verifying technical specifications and work order cards

  • Drafting project documentation such as Project Definition Documents, Project Quality Plans, Project Health and Safety Plans, Plans. Method Statements, Risk Assessments.

  • Producing project delivery plans and monitoring progress.

  • Developing risk logs and managing project risks.

  • Undertaking front end optioneering activities and presenting proposals to Stakeholders for agreement.

  • Co-ordinating contractors and designers in development and acceptance of proposals, through to delivery of contracted works on site

  • Supervising and setting contractors to work.

  • Assurance process and activities.

Note3: May be asked to work unsociable hours during Station Outage and provide Weekend / Bank Holiday cover.

Note4: Expected to attend site normal working hours Monday to Friday – 40hrs per week.

  • Engineering degree qualified with relevant power station industry experience - Electrical/C&I.

  • Knowledge of or worked in similar regulated process industries.

  • Suitable relevant technical experience including the preparation of technical documentation, the review and approval of technical proposals and procedures.

  • Core capability with electrical / C&I engineering; with experience of close working with other disciplines

  • Experience of supervising and setting contractors/sub-contractors to work in their roles and experience in leading a project team.

  • Able to work with Hy2 site operations, the Client & contractor project teams to integrate the project activities into the HY2 Work Week Planning process.

  • Knowledge of or worked in similar regulated process industries.

  • Able to develop new ideas; both in generating suggestions and sharing good practice.

  • Works well in a team; displaying an open, honest and collaborative style with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • Able to communicate with individuals and groups to make a positive impact at meetings, workshops etc.

  • Able to address problems in a logical manner, viewing them from several aspects and recommend suitable actions.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, able to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders (e.g. both technical and business).

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation including CDM and HSWA

  • Able to develop project definitions, scopes, Quality plans etc. & ensure seamlessly integrated with each other & site operations.

  • Suitable industry experience of testing and commissioning activities.

  • Proficient user of MS Office.

  • Ability to discuss ideas and plans competently and with confidence.

  • Accuracy, tenacity, diplomacy, results oriented.

  • Good organisational and time management skills.

  • Fluent English – written & verbal.


  • PMQ (APMP-level D) qualified.

  • Nuclear experience, working within a regulated, licenced environment.

  • Strong understanding of the need for Quality within the project environment and familiarity with the use and structure of Quality Assurance documentation.

  • Have a working knowledge of EDF Investment Delivery (ID), EDF Site Work Management processes.

  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.

  • Knowledge of budgets, cost control and commercial awareness.

  • French language – written & verbal.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must recognise the importance of nuclear safety and zero harm.

Security Clearance:

  • BPSS level security clearance.
