JSEG Mechanical/Structural SME Systems Engineer


The Engineering and Science Services and Capabilities Augmentation (ESSCA) contract provides engineering, scientific, and technical support to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL. Our Structural Design & Analysis team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks for structures and environments systems engineering support of the Space Launch System (SLS) including the Stages element. This position will be located at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) located in New Orleans, LA.

We are searching for a subject matter expert to support Core Stage Propulsion integration at MAF. Working in a highly integrated team, you will perform integration activities across Core Stage Subsystems and across Elements to enable the design, integration, test, and operation of the SLS. The Core Stage structural mechanical systems include support beams and struts, structures, LOX and Hydrogen propellant tanks, feedlines, fluids, propellants, plumbing, piping, actuators, valves, sensors, avionic supports, TPS and fasteners.

Working independently and in an integrated, collaborative team, your responsibilities would include:

  • Participate in technical interchange, project planning, production and integration status and other appropriate meetings to maintain a current knowledge base of design requirements, issues, action items, and resolution activities.

  • Participate in and support Material Review and Engineering Review Boards (MRB and ERB) in support of the structural/mechanical related issues.

  • Provide Subject Matter Expert support to the MSFC engineering and project personnel any findings or issues from the MRB or ERB and provide verbal and written communications regarding any structural or mechanical topics.

  • Identify issues, pursue resolutions and provide supporting analyses related to any structural/mechanical systems, proof testing, fasteners or epoxies. Complete assigned action items.

  • Conduct trade studies/assessments to determine the optimal design and integration solutions.

  • Collect data and perform assessments of the system to continually assess compliance against design and integration across Elements.

  • Provide integration subject matter insight, evaluation and review of Core Stage verification compliance documents at the element level.

  • Evaluate Change Requests for impacts to structural/mechanical systems and vehicle integration.

  • Review relevant verification and validation information for structural and mechanical systems, proof testing, fasteners and epoxies.

  • Document and deliver results with recommendations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Masters with at least 18 years of experience or BS with at least 20 years of experience.

Skills and experience should demonstrate:

  • Recognized expert in mechanical/structural design and integration for aerospace applications is required.

  • Complete understanding of fracture analysis, proof testing, fasteners, and epoxies is required.

  • Working knowledge and experience with NASA or commercial space flight design and verification and flight operations documentation and requirements is required.

  • Experience participating in Engineering Review and Material Review Boards is required.

  • Skilled in deliberating, advising, advocating, and negotiating resolution of critical issues is required.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to work in a team environment is required.

  • Prior experience with NASA or its contractors is desired.

  • Membership (or equivalent recognition) on an external technical society, committee/board is desired.

  • Familiar with NASA or DoD standards and specifications is desired.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%). May require caring up to 10 lbs (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
