By joining us as a Principal Tunnel Engineer you’ll work on planning, design and construction of tunnels and other underground structures. This opportunity can work out of most of our West Coast locations in our hybrid working environment.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Leading feasibility studies, preliminary design or detailed design for major underground projects, including structural analysis of underground structures and engineering support during construction.

  • Serving in a design management role for West Region underground projects and providing support to teams in other regions as required.

  • Supporting West Region pursuits through the provision of technical input on tunneling and underground structures.

  • Managing and developing client relationships.

  • To quickly establish a network within Jacobs global tunnel and ground engineering team to be able to leverage Jacobs resources to deliver projects.

  • To exhibit a high degree of oral and written communication skills and participate in interviews and presentations as required.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in California or Washington State or the ability to obtain registration within 6 months

  • At least 15 years of direct relevant experience.

  • Demonstrable project management or design management experience for major underground projects in the transportation and/or water markets.

  • Familiarity with design and construction of tunnels and caverns by TBM, drill and blast and SEM / NATM methods.

  • Familiarity with design and construction of other underground structures including shafts and cut and cover structures.

  • Ability to lead teams in underground structure design and analysis.

  • Excellent analytical and technical writing skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Flexibility to accommodate occasional travel for assignments.

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering

  • Delivery of Design-Build projects.

  • Experience with Progressive Design-Build delivery.

  • Experience across multiple markets, particularly transportation and water.

  • Design management experience is preferred, experience with program management of large underground projects would also be considered.

  • Structural analysis and design of tunnels, shafts, caverns, cross passages, adits and other underground infrastructure.

  • Structural analysis and design in soft ground and rock.

  • Familiarity with finite element and/or finite difference software.

· Evaluation and characterization of ground conditions and geotechnical parameters in relation to underground structures.

  • Selection and design of support of excavation.

  • Selection and design of ground improvement.

  • Developing contract documents, plans, details and specifications.
