Jacobs Image Scientist- TS with SCI Eligibility in Quantico, Virginia

In this role you will support challenging, mission-critical projects that make a direct impact on the nation’s security and intelligence mission.

The Image Scientist’s role is to apply knowledge of and experience with remote sensing principles and techniques to perform highly complex analyses, develop algorithms that meet customer requirements, and evaluate technical reports from outside vendors for suitability to meet customer requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research in applied image processing and scientific analysis of imagery; knowledge of image formation, and associated discipline phenomenology

  • Experience with design, testing, and implementation of remote sensing systems, equipment, and phenomenologies, including application of algorithms to meet customer requirements

  • Experience in development of algorithms for the calibration, configuration and enhancement of Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) sensors as well as for the detection/classification of targets; enhancing algorithms for processing, conditioning and storing image data from HSI systems.

  • Provide imagery science support specifically related to the exploitation of optical and spectral imagery

  • Investigate innovative and emerging technologies to incorporate into spectral analysis

  • Proficiency with techniques, algorithms, and scientific analysis of associated data processing using COTS image processing software.

  • Proficiency in algorithm development for the calibration, configuration and enhancement of Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) sensors as well as for the detection/classification of targets; enhancing algorithms for processing, conditioning and storing image data from HSI systems.

  • Analyze and prepare documentation for customer. Ensure that documentation is correct and is in accordance with proper engineering techniques and specifications.

  • Analyze operational requirements and recommend optical or programming solutions to meet customer needs, or modifications to eliminate causes of malfunctions.

  • Expert knowledge in image processing, statistical analysis and spectroscopy; strong programming skills in one of the following languages: ENVI, IDL, MATLAB, Python, Java, C/C ; experience in documenting and presenting scientific data and results.

  • Maintain liaison with customer’s contractor or vendor representatives to review, monitor, and evaluate conformity to project task specifications and project schedules.

  • Prepare status and progress reports and periodically brief customer representatives on the program or project status.

  • May be asked to supervise and provide guidance to image analysts or electronics technicians in the maintenance, evaluation, repair, design, fabrication, and installation of electro-optical equipment in fulfillment of customer requirements.

  • Perform standard laboratory and office duties, additionally including some climbing and lifting up to 40 lbs unassisted.

  • This position requires work in airborne (fixed and rotary wing), and/or seaborne platforms.

  • Occasional travel in support of field operations may be required and some physical stress in support of the customer’s mission may be anticipated.

  • Work occasional overtime as needed and as directed by the customer in support of mission critical requirements.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • Algorithm development for the calibration, configuration and enhancement of Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) sensors

  • Ability to conduct sensor operations on small aircraft in potentially turbulent environment

  • Experience with ENVI image processing software, and spectroscopy

  • Working knowledge of applied physics, optics, higher mathematics; ability to solve complex problems and create innovative solutions

  • Ability and willingness to obtain FAA Part 107 certification in preparation for customer potential migration to Unmanned Airborne System (UAS) platforms

  • Microsoft Office literacy

  • Good communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a high degree of self-motivation

Clearance Required:

  • Active TS with SCI eligibility and able to pass polygraph

Minimum Education:

  • MS or MA in Imaging Science, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field

Minimum Years of Experience:

  • 5 years of work experience in remote sensing or related field

Preferred:

  • Programming skills in several of the following languages: IDL, Python, Java, C/C , etc.

  • Ability to conduct data collections and statistical analysis, and control and diagnostic software development

  • Algorithm development for the calibration, configuration and enhancement of Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) sensors

  • Familiarity with optical design, optical physics, and optical components

  • Experience developing briefings and training materials to transfer technology to colleagues and clients

  • Experience with UAS operation and associated wireless communications

  • Familiarity with sensor calibration, characterization, and radiometry
