Prototype Machinist


The candidate will work in the Model, Machine,and Fabrication shop, and with its personnel supporting research facilities inan industrial setting. They will be responsible for the design, layout,programming and machining of custom prototype parts needed to support researchprojects. The candidate will workclosely with other shop personnel, often helping them complete their projectsas needed to meet schedule requirements


HSdiploma and trade school, 10 years’ experience programming and operating CNCand manual lathes and mills, machining custom parts.


  • Must be willing to put safety first, and work within Jacobs’ strong safety culture.

  • Experienced machining stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel, PVC, Teflon, and other metals and materials.

  • Ability to program and load drawing information to CNC equipment using conversational, G and M codes, and CAD platforms.

  • Experienced using manual milling machines and lathes.

  • Experienced using CAD packages.

  • Experienced in document capture, drawing and program revision control.

  • Must be able to machine from a design drawing, job layout, written specifications or a researcher’s concept or idea.

  • Ability to interpret drawings to establish critical dimensions needed to machine a given pat.

  • Control inventory of basic stock material, tooling, and hardware needed to perform work.

  • Effectively communicate work plan and required work with shop fabricator, welder, and general technicians.

  • Contribute to all aspects of work flow through the Fabrication Shop with strong problem-solving skills.

  • Must be able to operate all shop machines and equipment including; CNC milling machines, CNC Lathes, CNC plasma cutting table, standard milling machines and lathes, brakes, metal shear, punches, grinders, sanders, welders, drill presses, band saws, power tools. All associated wood shop equipment including table saws, panel saws, and miter saws etc.

  • Working knowledge of other trades and skills such as; electrical, welding, pipe fitting and shop operations in an industrial setting.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed in a dynamic work environment.

  • Contribute to, and maintain good general housekeeping of the custom prototype fabrication shop.
