Senior Java Software Engineer


The Senior Java Software Engineer will provide on-site support to thecustomer in delivering web-based dashboards that allow decision makers accessto actionable information about chemicals in order to meet specific customerneeds. The dashboards consolidate information from disparate sources ascollections of flexible, visual widgets, where individual widgets synthesizeinformation according to user specifications. Widgets will then be combinedinto user-specific dashboards, where user partners can customize theinformation displayed to support diverse decision-making tasks. The Senior Java SoftwareEngineer will have overall technical responsibility for the design,configuration, implementation of multiple web services and APIs using RESTfuldesign principles that shall be self-documenting and self-discoverable.The Senior Software Engineer will developthese APIs and web services in a modular architecture format that will permitexisting modules to be re-used across multiple application implementations, andwill document the design and implementation techniques/strategies in the NCCT’sinstance of Atlassian Confluence.The use of such a customizable, re-usableframework allows information from multiple sources to be recombined intocomprehensive profiles according to programmatic needs of the client. The Senior Software Engineer willbe expected to work collaboratively effectively with NCCT staff andcontractors, and will be required to broker communications between NCCT partiesfor multiple data sources to develop the required web services and APIsrequired for the web-based dashboards.

Specifically, the Senior JavaSoftware Engineer will:

1.Leadefforts to support existing web applications and support the customer withrespect to back-end design, architecture, and documentation;

2.Lead thedesign and implement updates and additions to existing web services ensuring properdesign, structure and frameworks;

3.Participatewithin application development teams, and lead in designing and documentingback-end systems and web APIs;

4.Assist inthe preparation of specifications and other activities requiring knowledge ofback-end development principles and techniques;

5.Interpretrequirements and perform analyses to ensure that objectives are met;

6.Mentorand review the work of less experience developers;

7.Performother duties as required.


The successful candidate willpossess the following minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, ComputerInformation Systems, Computer Engineering or closely related field of study andeight (8) years of documented, progressive software engineering workexperience, OR Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer InformationSystems, Computer Engineering, or closely related field of study and seven (7)years of documented, progressive software engineering work experience.

  • Prior professional expertise with Red HatEnterprise Linux servers;

  • Must possess expertise in the followingtechnologies:

  • Java 1.8


  • Red Hat JBoss stack

  • Red Hat Developer Studio/Eclipse/IntelliJ

  • Ruby 2.x

  • Rails 4.x

  • Git Version Control System

  • JAX-RS

  • JUnit

  • RESTful Web Services

  • HTTP

  • Linux

  • Prior professional experience working inAgile/Scrum/Kanban framework;

  • Excellentwritten and oral communications skills;

  • Abilityto work in a highly collaborative environment, highly integrated work team onmultiple projects simultaneously;

  • Abilityto work on-site Monday through Fridays during normal business hours (8:00 am –5:00 pm) at client facilities located at RTP, NC;

  • Ability to pass a backgroundinvestigation and a drug test.

  • Ability to work effectively in the Red Hat Linuxenvironment

  • Comfort with version control systems (git)

General Skills:

  • Solid understanding of web services and RESTfulAPIs.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the abilityto work individually and as a member of a team, on multiple projectssimultaneously
