Associate Network Administrator

The Associate Network Administrator assists in the installation, maintenance, and usage of the organization's local area network. The selected candidate will assist in the establishment of network procedures regarding access methods and time, security validation checks, and documentation. This role frequently reports to a Intermediate or Senior Network Administrator.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Inform users when there are network problems
Troubleshoot network problems
Research software and hardware issues regarding the network
Maintain network software and hardware inventories
Install, operate, maintain, monitor, manage, and troubleshoot USTRANSCOM’s classified and unclassified networks (e.g., routers, switches, cabling, etc)
Support all networking backbone (physical, data, network, transport, and session layers of the OSI model) issues between internal Scott AFB networks, including USTRANSCOM, Air Force, SDDC, and external networks as required
Train users on network operation
Assist with the documentation and maintenance of accurate enterprise network architecture diagrams (physical and logical), equipment room layouts with rack elevation diagrams, inside and outside plant specifications, and hardware configuration utilizing government provided tools (e.g., Visio, CMDB) with 98% accuracy, documenting all changes within two (2) business days of receipt
Make changes in accordance with change and configuration management processes, within the prescribed process timelines
Coordinate and work closely with Intermediate and Senior Network Administrators to provide network capability for USTRANSCOM mission
Maintain networks in accordance with applicable Defense Information System Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), DoD/USTRANSCOM guidance, and commercial best security and engineering practices
Install and maintain the network transport medium (i.e., fiber, wireless, copper) to include user access drops at their desks
Operate, proactively monitor, and maintain network connectivity within and between USTRANSCOM buildings, other Scott AFB buildings (as designated by the Government), Senior Officer Quarters, and network extensions to off-site locations (currently there are ten ) as assigned
Minimize disruption of day-to-day operations for planned upgrades IAW the USTRANSCOM ASI process
Maintain an annualized availability rating of 99.75% (metrics collected and reported monthly in MSR), not to include scheduled maintenance windows
Operate, maintain, and manage both secure and non-secure wireless communication infrastructure equipment and service within USTRANSCOM buildings - Examples of equipment and services include, but are not limited to, access points, wireless LAN controllers, security devices and applications, mobile device managers, and other related equipment and software used in providing wireless services
Provide support for Domain Name Server (DNS) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) capability for classified and unclassified networks to support USTRANSCOM
Provide support for inbound and outbound SMTP Gateway servers that communicate to and from the unclassified TRANSCOM.MIL/USTRANSCOM.MIL and classified TRANSCOM.SMIL.MIL / USTRANSCOM.SMIL.MIL domains
Configure and manage Internet Protocol (IP) address space and VLANs, issue IP addresses for new equipment/workstations and troubleshoot IP address issues with outside agencies
Implement approved network centric service requests within ten (10) business days of approval, provided the necessary hardware is available
Respond to service desk incident and request fulfillment actions
Provide support on an on-call basis after duty hours with a two (2) hour response time to begin work
Required Position Qualifications:
IAT Level II Certification (Security or equivalent)
Fundamental understanding of Information Technology and associated terminology
Ability to possess Secret-level Department of Defense (DoD) Security Clearance
Desired Position Qualifications:
Associates Degree in Computer Science or IT related field
Network Certification or 1 – 2 years of networking related experience
Secret-level Department of Defense (DoD) Security Clearance
Fundamental understanding of the following technologies:
Networking Protocols to include Spanning Tree (STP), Border Gateway (BGP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), static routing, ether-channel, Virtual Switching system (VSS), Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF), and switch stacking
Internet Protocol (IP) Subnetting
Power and Cabling Standards
Remote Access Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Domain Name System (DNS)
Network Authentication (802.1X/TACACS)
Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) Administration
Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk (90%). Requires sitting at a computer terminal for long periods of time (90%). There is a possibility that due to parking availability and location of work area walking moderate to long distances can sometimes be required.
Inside office/cubicle environment. Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers and all levels of management (100%).
Equipment and Machines
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, copier, and other general office equipment (100%). Ability to conduct evaluation of third and fourth generation or current state of the art computer hardware and software and its ability to support specific requirements, interfacing with other equipment and systems.
Attendance is critical. Work hours are normally 8 hours per day and 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Being prompt is important to provide continuous and on-going service to customers. Attendance is important to maintain continuity of service. Work outside of normal duty hours may be required with as little as one-hour advance notice. Overtime is infrequent, but important when required (1%). Must be able to support 24-hour Weekend/Holiday On-Call Operations and respond onsite within two (2) hours of notification.

Must be able to obtain unescorted access to work areas. Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
