Jacobs Combination Building Inspector/Plans Reviewer - Treasure Island, FL in Tampa, Florida

As a Combination Building Inspector/Plans Reviewer, you’ll join a collaborative team ensuring that our clients can deliver their services - uninterrupted. Based in Treasure Island, FL you will assist or fill-in for the Building Official, perform plan reviews and inspect buildings and building systems at various stages of construction, alteration, and repair for compliance with applicable state and local codes as well as conformance with project conditions; visit premises and provide information and assistance to owners, developers and departments or divisions of the jurisdiction to gain conformance to codes and report findings. To be successful in this role, candidates will have considerable knowledge of building construction methods, materials and principles, as well as applicable municipal, regional, and state regulatory practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs field inspections of residential and commercial buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling; ensures that structures are being constructed in accordance with approved plans and specifications and in compliance with applicable state and local laws, ordinances, and codes (including, but not limited to, building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and energy codes) to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

  • Renders approval or disapproval of inspected sites regarding building code compliance.

  • Conducts periodic field inspections before and during construction, remodeling, or repair; checks the safety of construction and installation practices; inspects the quality of materials and methods of construction for footings and foundations, excavations, wood framing, concrete work, steel erection, lathing, plastering, tile work, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and other construction work; makes final inspections to clear permits.

  • Prepares daily records and reports of inspections performed covering conditions found.

  • Interprets codes and regulations; reviews, research, and communicates results in determining applicable codes/ordinances; explains required inspections, construction requirements and construction and repair methods and materials to owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and the public; advises owners on matters related to building permits; investigates and resolves building and related complaints.

  • May assist with reviewing plans and specifications.

  • Maintains a variety of files and records related to areas of assignment including permit binders, records of inspections made and actions taken, and plans; inputs and retrieves information from computer databases; prepares reports, correspondence, and a variety of other written materials as requested.

  • Attends and participates in workshops, meetings, seminars, and/or training opportunities to maintain certification, acquire current industry knowledge and maintain current knowledge of regulatory developments.

  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of assigned tasks.

  • Maintains assigned vehicle in accordance with policy and procedure.

  • Consults with supervisor concerning unusual situations requiring more experienced judgment.

  • Reviews plans submitted by architects, engineers, and property owners for compliance with the Florida Building Code.

  • Four (4) years of combined experience in the field of construction or related field inspection or plans review that meet the specifications required by Florida Administrative Code for Inspector Certification.

  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license on date of hire.

  • Travel up to 40%

Ideally, here’s what you will also have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or building related field

  • Three (3) years of additional building trade work experience (plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and/or structural).

  • General knowledge of code application in construction, remodeling, or repair

  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to building construction and zoning requirements.

  • Extensive knowledge of the following: building codes and regulations applicable to commercial and residential inspection work; methods and regulations pertinent to mechanical inspection; materials, methods, and regulations pertinent to plumbing inspection; zoning regulations; site drainage and grading; sign code; and the fire code as it applies to building construction.

The work areas may be indoor, outdoor, have loud noise, active machinery, high pressure fluid systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights and depths, fumes, air borne particles, noxious gases, and chemicals. The use of appropriate safety equipment will be mandatory in these areas to prevent hazardous contact.
