Jacobs Senior Archaeologist/Field Director in Tempe, Arizona

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (Jacobs) is an international corporation with a robust international cultural resources team. In North America, we support a variety of transportation, renewable energy, transmission, and water projects for agency and private-sector clients. We are currently seeking a Senior Archaeologist/Field Director based out of Tempe, Arizona. This position is classified as a full-time position that is primarily focused on fieldwork excellence.

Work will be performed either from Jacobs’ Tempe office location or from a local home office. Successful candidates should live in the greater metropolitan Phoenix area or be planning to relocate there.

The desired candidate will demonstrate a proven track record with successful project delivery on transportation, renewable energy, transmission, and water projects.

Key Responsibilities

Duties include conducting site file checks at various archaeological repositories throughout Arizona and the greater Southwest; preparing various cultural resources reports (including Class I overviews, Class III survey reports, monitoring reports, and testing/data recovery reports including rigorous research designs); competently directing all levels of archaeological fieldwork (including archaeological survey, construction monitoring, testing, and data recovery); compliance documents and supporting Jacobs’ division manager with quality control, marketing, and project management.

Candidates must be able and willing to work outdoors in remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain. Must demonstrate awareness for workplace safety, and be willing to work independently or with limited supervision when conditions are appropriate. Must demonstrate an ability to mentor junior staff and to supervise teams of personnel on field projects.

Pay is commensurate with experience and candidates should include selected publication references and a technical report writing sample along with the resume submitted for consideration.

  • M.A. degree or higher in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology.

  • Demonstrated experience in Southwestern archaeology.

  • Demonstrated experience in writing technical reports and compliance documents.

  • At least 8 years of field experience including Class III survey, construction monitoring, testing, and phased data recovery.

  • Knowledge of GIS software, including Survey123 and Field Maps applications, and field GPS equipment (Trimble R1 and iPad tablets).

  • Competence with applicable cultural resources regulations, including Section 106 and applicable Arizona state statutes.

  • Ability/willingness to travel.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Organizational and time management skills to effectively complete assigned. workload within defined timelines and in accordance with established standards.

Ideally, you'll also have:

  • Experience with GIS

  • Experience in Great Basin and California archaeology

  • Experience in historic resource documentation

  • Project or task management experience

  • NEPA experience
