Jacobs is seeking a Building Inspector to join our collaborative Metro Atlanta team. As a Building Inspector you’ll inspect buildings and building systems at various stages of construction, alteration and repair for compliance with applicable state and local codes as well as conformance with project conditions; visit premises and provide information and assistance to owners, contractors, developers and departments or divisions of the Jurisdiction to help with conformance to the code and report findings.
You’ll also:
Perform field inspections of residential and commercial buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling; ensures that structures are being constructed in accordance with approved plans and specifications and in compliance with applicable state and local laws, ordinances, and codes (including, but not limited to, building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and energy codes) to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the public
Conduct periodic field inspections before and during construction, remodeling, or repair; check the safety of construction and installation practices; inspect the quality of materials and methods of construction for footings and foundations, excavations, wood framing, concrete work, steel erection, lathing, plastering, tile work, masonry, electrical, plumbing, and other construction work; make final inspections to clear permits
Interpret codes and regulations; review, research, and communicate results in determining applicable codes/ordinances; explain required inspections, construction requirements and construction and repair methods and materials to owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and the public; advise owners on matters related to building permits; investigate and resolve building and related complaints
Assist with reviewing plans and specifications and maintain a variety of files and records related to areas of assignment including permit binders, records of inspections made and actions taken, and plans; input and retrieve information from computer databases; prepare reports, correspondence, and a variety of other written materials as requested
Monitor for construction work being done without a permit; assist code enforcement with construction related issues; track projects for compliance
Perform other duties as assigned, including cross training with building and land development staff

Here’s What You’ll Need:
High School Diploma or GED and advanced experience in building construction
3-5 years of experience in engineering, construction, inspections or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Basic plan review knowledge
Experience with the following: building codes and regulations applicable to commercial and residential inspection: code compliance of mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems; materials, methods, and regulations; zoning regulations; site drainage and grading; sign code; and the fire code
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, builders, city staff, city and county officials and the general public
Ability to interact professionally and calmly with contractors, citizens, vendors, fellow employees, and others at all times
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Possess a valid state driver’s license with no major infractions
Ideally, You’ll Also Have:
Possess and maintain certification in inspection of two or more building trades.
ICC Certification: B1- Residential Building Inspector, ICC Certification: E1- Residential Electrical Inspector, ICC Certification: M1- Residential Mechanical Inspector, ICC Certification: P1- Residential Plumbing Inspector, ICC Certification: FG – Fuel Gas Inspector, B2- Commercial Building Inspector, ICC Certification: E2- Commercial Electrical Inspector, ICC Certification: M2- Commercial Mechanical Inspector, ICC Certification: P2- Commercial Plumbing Inspector
Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC) Level 1A IA and 1B IB certification desired required within one year of employment.
Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR).
