Jacobs Technology Group (JTG) is looking for a Senior Power Systems Design Engineer to support projects ranging from small studies to multi-million dollar turn-key supply. A successful candidate must be team-oriented, organized, able to communicate to all levels of the organization, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Your work will be unique and challenging while supporting several projects in a dynamic and exciting environment. This position will provide you with an unparalleled opportunity to work with a team of motivated engineering and business professionals who work to ensure client satisfaction and deliver projects within scope, budget, and schedule.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop drawings including one-line diagrams, elementary wiring diagrams, power system plans, and installation details.

  • Design power distribution systems that include load flow analysis, short circuit analysis, arc flash analysis, system safety, human safety, and other advanced systems.

  • Develop power distribution protection schemes with coordination studies, transfer schemes, etc.

  • Perform load calculations for sizing electrical components, cables, conduit, equipment spacing

  • Specify major electrical system components including substations, switchgear, distribution panels, MCCs, transformers, disconnects, and drives for LV and MV systems, both AC and DC.

  • Develop interfaces to facility equipment using hardwired interfaces and industrial networks.

  • Apply NEC, NESC, NFPA 70E, and other applicable codes to develop state-of-the-art solutions.

  • Support hardware assembly and fabrication during factory and onsite installation.

  • Lead power system design projects through all phases to include design, fabrication, implementation, testing and commissioning.

  • Provide on-site team direction of facility startup, checkout, and commissioning activities.

  • Communicate with clients and management regarding project status.

  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and departments to ensure project success.

  • Estimate system design, material, install, checkout, commissioning, and activation of projects.

  • Plan labor resources and scheduling project milestones to ensure project completion within technical scope, budget, and project schedule.

  • Develop proposals to capture future work with current clients and new markets.

  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on engineering and business development processes.

  • Provide quality system processes such as checking the work of others, following standard procedures, and ensuring compliance to codes and standards.

Here’s what you’ll need :

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program.

  • Minimum 25 years of experience in power distribution system design, implementation, or commissioning.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in good standing.

  • Experience in a lead engineer role, managing resources to a schedule and budget, coordinating with other disciplines, estimating labor requirements for new and existing projects

  • Experience in software skills such as SKM, ETAP, SEL synchroWAVe, ArcPro is a plus.

  • An interest and background in electrical safety, electrical power distribution systems (including switchgear, substations, MCCs, PLCs, drive systems, protective relays, cable and wireway), lightning protection, grounding, lighting design, smart-grid systems, micro-grid systems, SCADA systems, and challenging projects.

  • An ability to lead single and multi-discipline engineering teams to deliver technically successful designs and projects, often based on unique systems.

  • An ability and willingness to train, develop, and mentor junior colleagues.

  • A desire to develop ingenious alternative approaches to challenges, and drive innovation during all phases of a project.

  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs.

  • Proximity to electrical circuits up to 161kVAC (5%-15%)

  • Special clothing/equipment may include appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including eye protection, hearing protection, arc flash protection, shock protection, etc. (5%-15%)

Description of Work Environment

  • Office, lab environment, or indoors on a construction site (>80%)

  • Field work outside (10%-20%)

  • Travel to company offices, customer sites for meetings, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting (>10%)

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks

  • General office equipment (>80%)

  • Power Distribution devices such as Transformers, Switchgear, Motor Control Centers (MCCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), servo drives, industrial instrumentation, data acquisition measurement systems, etc. (>50%)

  • Multimeters (5%-15%)

  • Signal generators and Oscilloscopes (5%-15%)

Criticality of Attendance

  • Work arrangement is for work to be performed remote from the office

  • Overtime to meet project schedules and milestones (10%-20%)

  • Field work attendance and punctuality is critical
