Your Impact:

Jacobs are recruiting for Mechanical Engineers to join our Engineering Development team, which has recently won several important projects, particularly in Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling) and Robotics (RH&R), and has a host of exciting new opportunities in nuclear fusion, new reactor development, nuclear decommissioning, operational reactor maintenance and support.

As one of the fastest growing departments in CMS-I, we are regularly involved in delivering a variety of exciting bids and projects within a number of different industries and as such the ideal candidate needs to be someone with a good broad ranging technical background, who can be comfortable taking the lead when required and has a demonstrable track record of contributing to projects effectively within a highly regulated environment. We are looking for candidates who can encourage and develop others in their team, and who are accustomed to taking a hands-on approach.

This role will be based in our Birchwood office in the North West of the UK but there will be a need for periodic visits to client sites, as projects require.

The successful candidate will support the delivery of tasks within Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling) and Robotics (RH&R) projects and also work in a bid environment. This is an ideal role for an ambitious person to join a team with a strong focus on development and growth opportunities for capable individuals. Your responsibilities will be supporting various and diverse nuclear clients providing Front End Engineering Design through to Full Life Cycle project requirements including:

  • Technical deliverables, e.g. reports, calculations, drawings

  • Delivering scope of work to time and budget

  • Mentoring less experienced engineers

  • Ensuring design is produced in line with required Regulatory, Customer and Company standards for EHSS&Q.

  • Delivery of all discipline related engineering deliverables to cost, schedule and quality

  • Identification and application of discipline related design standards and specifications applicable to the project

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent (e.g. HNC/HND with significant experience) in an appropriate engineering discipline.

  • Self-starter with a professional approach and a technical background and industry experience.

  • Proven experience within a nuclear or similarly highly regulated environment.

  • Proven experience, either professionally or recreationally, in projects related to RH&R

  • Motivated individual with the ability to work to deadlines and communicate project progress.

  • Good communication skills and ability to articulate information.

  • Ability to interface and liaise with key client and internal stakeholders.

  • Committed to Continuous Professional Development.

  • Displays a broad mechanical understanding, and also preferably some knowledge of electrical / mechatronics.

  • Willingness to commit to limited national (and possibly international) travel in support of projects.

  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain full UK security clearance (SC).


  • Chartered Mechanical Engineer (or soon to be chartered).

  • Familiarity of Nuclear sector would be advantageous.

  • Knowledge/experience in hydraulics and/or pneumatics

  • Knowledge/experience in vision systems and/or VR/AR

  • Knowledge/experience in automation/industrial robotics
