About the opportunity:
Jacobs has an ever-increasing portfolio of work across some of the UK and Ireland's most high-profile projects and programmes. Working within large multidisciplinary teams, we deliver environmental monitoring programmes, support planning applications, undertake consenting and advisory roles and post project appraisal. We are currently working across a range of sectors and projects including delivering a number of high profile national infrastructure developments, power, water and transport infrastructure projects, national flood defence and habitat restoration schemes.
In autumn 2022 we expanded our taxonomic capabilities at the Jacobs Innovation Hub in Birchwood. This a 12,000m 2 laboratory facility at the forefront of research, testing, analytical and bespoke engineering for nuclear technology, clean energy, aerospace, environmental assessment and protection and infrastructure.
About you:
You will join a diverse team of 170+ ecologist in the UK (600 globally) and work with hydrologists, geomorphologists, engineers, planners and project managers to provide support and advice to our clients. You will ensure aquatic input is considered by project teams, work as a first point of contact and, with the support of the wider team, provide high quality technical advice.
To support this expansion of environmental capacity, we are looking to recruit a range of aquatic technical specialists at Birchwood.
The role will include:
Working in the laboratory processing invertebrate samples – Accurate processing and identification (mixed taxon/species level) of freshwater and/or marine invertebrate samples.
Analysis and reporting of aquatic data – including use of biological indices and specialist software such as RICT2 and PRIMER.
Designing and leading aquatic monitoring programmes - develop survey programmes, lead and/or manage survey teams in freshwater environments and be responsible for high quality data collection.
Working in multidisciplinary teams – quickly building rapport and trust to ensure that aquatic ecology requirements are recognised, acknowledged and constraints acted upon.
Leveraging your experience of national legislation - to support Environmental Impact Assessment, Water Framework Directive and Habitats Regulation Appraisals etc.
A willingness to both learn from and mentor others – develop and share skills that build team and individual resilience. This will include engagement with our global communities of practice, externally facing communications (conferences, presentations, client meetings) and training events.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
Experience as a taxonomic specialist including sample analysis and identification meeting Analytical Quality Control targets
Experience working in a laboratory setting with a strong awareness of Health and Safety;
Experience with analysing data using biological indices and specialist software;
Professional membership to a relevant body;
Ability to work well as an autonomous team, with technical support from other regional teams (Reading, London, Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh).
