Jacobs nuclear business supports customers in the energy generation, new build, decommissioning and defence sectors. We are involved in some of the most innovative and impressive projects across the globe, such as ITER - the world’s largest fusion experiment.

The Engineering Development business, within Jacobs’ Critical Mission Services group (CMS-I), is based at Birchwood, near Warrington in North-West England, and is the centre for the company’s expertise in Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling) and Robotics (RH&R), particularly in nuclear applications. The business has around 120 staff made up of scientists, engineers, technicians and craftsmen, providing a capability for research & development, engineering, design & manufacture and physical testing in our extensive engineering laboratory facilities, and deployment & implementation at our clients’ sites. We specialise in Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling) and Robotics (RH&R) for new plant build, existing operational plant and decommissioning redundant plant, primarily in the nuclear fission and fusion sectors. Our clients in this area of work include EDF Energy (UK), Sellafield Ltd., UKAEA, Magnox, DSRL, ITER Organisation, Fusion for Energy, CEA, MHI, JNFL.

Jacobs are recruiting for Senior Remote Handling Engineers to join our Engineering Development team, which has recently won several important projects, particularly in Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling and Robotics (RH&R), and has a host of exciting new opportunities in nuclear fusion, new reactor development, nuclear decommissioning, operational reactor maintenance and support.

As one of the fastest growing departments in CMS-I, we are regularly involved in delivering a variety of exciting bids and projects within a number of different industries and as such the ideal candidate needs to be someone with a good broad ranging technical background, who is used to taking the lead when required and has a demonstrable track record of contributing to projects effectively within a highly regulated environment. We are looking for candidates who can encourage and develop others in their team, and who are accustomed to taking a hands-on approach.

This role will be based in our Birchwood office in the North West of the UK but there will be a need for periodic visits to client sites, as projects require.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • The successful candidate will support the delivery of tasks within Remote Inspection and Intervention / Handling and Robotics (RH&R) projects and also work in a bid environment. An ideal role for an ambitious person to join a team with a strong focus on development and growth opportunities for capable individuals. Your responsibilities will be supporting various and diverse nuclear clients providing Front End Engineering Design through to Full Life Cycle project requirements including:

  • To assist the Nuclear Process / Mechanical Engineering Lead in delivery of the Mechanical Engineering work packages to the required scope, quality, schedule and cost.

  • Responsible for managing the technical deliverables of the engineering packages in line with the planned deliverables agreed by the Engineering Lead.

  • Reviewing technical deliverables, e.g. reports, calculations, drawings

  • Delivering your scope of work to time and budget

  • Mentoring less experienced engineers.

Here’s what you’ll need :

We are looking for candidates with some of the following skills and experiences:

  • Educated to HNC / HND or degree in a relevant engineering discipline

  • Ability to execute assigned scopes of work and provide some level of discipline expertise to the business, in support of RH&R specialist Subject Matter Experts

  • Proven experience, either professionally or recreationally, in projects related to RH&R

  • Motivated individual with the ability to work to deadlines and communicate project progress

  • Ability to interface and liaise with client, suppliers and internal stakeholders

  • Display a broad mechanical understanding and knowledge of codes and standards, e.g. CDM, in order to be able to undertake different projects

  • Willingness to commit to limited national (and possibly international) travel in support of projects.

Experience of the following will be advantageous: hydraulics and/or pneumatics; vision systems and/or VR/AR; automation/industrial robotics; defence / nuclear sector; Hazardous materials

Due to our client requirements we will require you to be a British national with eligibility to obtain and maintain full UK security clearance (SC)
