Jacobs is looking for a Materials Chemistry student to join our world-class corrosion research team. Our experimental and theoretical research is mainly in support of the nuclear industry. There is a particular emphasis on understanding, predicting and preventing environmentally assisted cracking and corrosion in safety critical structures. Our corrosion laboratories, based near Manchester, have an extensive range of modern facilities, and our team of scientists and engineers are at the forefront of applied research in this field in the UK and overseas.

You will be responsible for supporting our team of scientists carrying out applied research for customer-funded projects, involving both chemistry and extended corrosion tests, during your placement year in industry. This work supports the safe, continued use of materials in nuclear reactors. Responsibilities will include:

  • Analysis and interpretation of experimental data generated.

  • Performance of experimental or analytical techniques with support from experienced staff.

  • Working safely, in accordance with risk assessments and associated systems, supporting the operation of our test rigs.

There may be opportunities for presentation of results to customers and for involvement in planning of research and interaction with the project management team. Training will be given in the operation of the facilities which include pressurized equipment, elevated temperatures and mechanical loading machines. The role will allow you to build your chemistry and materials science skills by working on a range of real research projects in a supportive environment with access to industry experts.

The role will be a standard working week, Monday to Friday. However, there may be occasional requirements to work outside of these hours with advanced notice.

Due to the nature of the work being undertaken, security clearance will be required prior to commencement of employment.

  • be able to follow local working instructions for test equipment and understand the importance of quality assurance processes

  • be familiar with laboratory COSHH and risk assessments

  • demonstrate a willingness to intervene to promote safe behaviours

  • have excellent written and spoken English language skills

Ideally, here’s what you’ll also have:

  • Proven communication skills; both verbally and written

  • Demonstrated a previous interest in working in the Engineering Sector
