We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced lawyer to join the dynamic legal department of a major engineering and construction company. We need somebody with a quality background (both academics and practical training) who is ready to be challenged in a fast-paced, commercial environment and is not afraid of genuine responsibility. The group's legal team consists of around 80 lawyers worldwide, and 14 of these are based in the UK.

The UK legal team supports and advises the business on many aspects of our numerous high profile projects both in the UK and overseas in our three Lines of Business namely a) Buildings and Infrastructure and Advance Facilities, b) Energy, Chemicals and Resources and c) Aerospace, Technology, Environmental and Nuclear. The Legal team works closely with our Sales and Operations people and with Management at all levels.

We are looking to recruit a solicitor or barrister to join the UK legal team to be based in either our Winnersh or one of our London offices.

The role on offer is immensely varied and challenging and will give the successful candidate the chance to make a real contribution to an exciting range of legal and commercial work. Examples of recent projects the UK Legal team has been involved in include:

  • a due diligence leading up to a multi-million $ acquisition of a major international civil engineering consultancy

  • a framework project management agreement for a multi $ billion social infrastructure project in Saudi Arabia

  • numerous bids in both the public and private sector, both within the UK and internationally

  • flagship major projects for UK Govt.

Reporting to a senior solicitor within the team, the successful candidate will:

  • Take responsibility for a wide range of complex construction and commercial contracts, from bid stage to negotiation and completion, including contracts with clients, joint venture agreements, guarantees, sub-contracts and confidentiality agreements.

  • Advise management on all aspects of legal risk

  • Provide legal support to operations during projects (e.g. dispute resolution)

  • Support corporate transactions and provide legal advice to other corporate functions

  • Delivery internal training on legal and contractual issues

Qualifications

Essential:

  • The successful candidate will be a qualified and experienced solicitor or barrister.

  • The successful candidate will have a strong academic record (achieving at least a 2.1 degree and a commendation or distinction on the Legal Practice Course)

  • The candidate must have trained with a leading law firm or well-respected in-house team.

  • The successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate an ability to identify risk, good commercial awareness and a clear and effective communication style.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of construction law.
