About the opportunity:

The sustained growth of our Stakeholder Engagement and Communications team requires a Manager to work on the construction phase of a major infrastructure project. The main purpose of the role is to manage and deliver community engagement in advance of and during construction. This will involve extensive travel in Hampshire, Surrey and London. It will also requires working from the construction office(s) as required.

This is a 18-month fixed term position based in our client site in Basingstoke. Our nearest Jacobs office is Winnersh, Reading.

As an experienced professional with a track record of delivering successful engagement and communications during construction of major infrastructure projects, you will be a champion for best practice. You will be proactive at identifying and addressing emerging community issues and understand what may result in a reputational risk.

This role requires you to manage and create engaging external materials, targeting the media, general public, communities and businesses, elected representatives and statutory stakeholders. You will have the ability to produce high quality communications materials and be adept at communicating complex technical information in a clear, easy to understand manner.

As an external representative for the project you will have highly developed skills in interacting with people at all levels and building strong relationships, both internally and externally. We need to be confident that you can manage relationships no matter how easy or challenging they become. You will need to be organised, diplomatic, and able to turn potentially tricky situations into positive ones. You will be experienced at evaluating the effectiveness of communications and engagement activity, and adept at presenting the conclusions, recommendation and lessons learned both internally and to the client.

The role will include

  • Managing and delivering construction communications and engagement activity, channels and materials on a high-profile project.

  • Stakeholder Relationship management

  • Proactively engaging with community groups, businesses and other stakeholders, face-to-face and on the phone, on a day to day basis; (some evening/weekend working may be required)

  • Producing high quality editorial copy, press releases, reports, publications and engagement supporting materials;

  • Client management

  • Event management

  • Dealing with complaints and enquiries.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Essential Criteria

  • Experience working across a broad range of engagement disciplines, including events, public meetings, communications, consultation and reputation management;

  • Experience working on construction projects.

  • Experience of engaging with community groups.

  • Outstanding written and verbal skills;

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills;

  • Fully comfortable presenting to large groups of people and working in pressurised environments where a cool head is required.

Desirable Skills

  • An understanding and experience of working in Public Affairs is desirable;

  • An understanding and experience of working with the media is desirable;

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in communications, public relations, politics, human geography or similar discipline;

  • Proven relevant work experience that demonstrates applied knowledge of stakeholder engagement and/or communications;

  • Knowledge of the planning delivering stakeholder engagement and communications programmes for large-scale construction projects.
