Our Water Catchment Management sector provides a focus for advising our clients on delivering sustainable drainage, flood risk management and civil engineering solutions. Water Catchment Management comprises in excess of 400 staff based in the UK and Europe, but with reach into the Middle East, Australasia and America.
To meet our growing UK business needs and future development aspirations we are looking for a civil engineer with 10+ years’ experience in the development of outline and detailed designs for surface water management solutions to be based in our Winnersh office (other locations would be considered for the right candidate, including Bristol, Reading and Exeter).

You will be joining a team of surface water management professionals in Winnersh and will also sit in the wider discipline of 50+ surface water management professionals across the UK & Europe. Whilst these teams are physically located in certain offices, this does not mean it will limit you to only working with those in your team, as we operate virtual teams to ensure the right skills are brought to each project. At present all staff are based in their homes due to the restrictions on movement as a result of COVID, and this will remain the case until our corporate policy changes. As a result you will be comfortable communicating with colleagues across the UK and Europe using tools such as Microsoft Teams.
As a senior engineer you will take a leading role on the design of projects for the Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities and other public and private clients including Water and Sewerage Companies, Highways England, Network Rail, HS2 and Major Airports. You will also work with other disciplines within the group (flood risk, rivers, hydrology, hydrogeology, hydroinfomatics, water sciences, and geomorphology) to deliver projects for major infrastructure clients.
Responsibilities will include:
Coordinating multi-disciplinary teams to produce outline and detailed design for surface water management projects including SuDS / green infrastructure, piped drainage, and design for exceedance projects
Developing Surface Water Management Plans;
Production of Flood Risk Assessments and associated drainage strategies;
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS)
Gravity piped drainage networks
Design for exceedance
Flow control structures
Production of Contracts and Technical specifications
Mentoring junior engineers through their technical and professional development
Checking and reviewing calculations and technical deliverables, including hydraulic models
Production of designers risk assessments
Management of drawing production
Supporting the Head of Discipline for Surface Water Management to share best practice across the UK & Europe
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Civil Engineering degree and working towards MICE, CWEM, or similar status
Working knowledge of relevant legislation, planning policy, guides and design standards relating to SuDS, green infrastructure, drainage, and surface water management
Practical design experience of SuDS / green infrastructure, and gravity piped drainage;
Competent user of Civil 3D software or equivalent
Demonstrable knowledge of Safety in Design and Designers responsibilities under CDM
Ability to develop, price and agree scope of services
Excellent report writing and presentation skills
Co-ordination of multi-disciplinary teams to develop design solutions (including landscape architects, soil scientists, geotechnical engineers, hydraulic modellers, technicians etc)
Able to create 3D hand sketches and/or visualisations through an appropriate software package of the SuDS / green infrastructure designs being developed
Able to demonstrate an understanding of BIM
Knowledge and application of hydraulic modelling packages (MicroDrainage, or Infoworks) and hydrology (FEH, ReFH2)
A good working knowledge of relevant statutory bodies likely to be partners or affected by the assessments, strategies, reports and designs developed e.g. the Environment Agency, Water & Sewerage Companies, and Local Authorities
An understanding of how to design foul drainage networks
Capable of design pump stations
Demonstrable experience in contract and specification preparation (specifically SuDS / green infrastructure elements)
Experience of site supervision of SuDS / green infrastructure projects including the contract management elementsProject Management
