Senior / Rail Systems Engineer - York

Our ever-growing Rail Group are expanding. We are looking to recruit a talented and experienced Rail Systems Engineer to help deliver and solve complex engineering challenges in the railway sector. As one of the key members of the design team, the Rail Systems Engineer is a key role supporting the delivery of key projects within the Rail Group.


  • Extensive post-graduate relevant experience in System Engineering preferably in Railway applications and the Rail Engineering Lifecycle,

  • Extensive experience in Systems Engineering, preferably in the railway infrastructure.

  • A working knowledge of IEC 15288 and the INCOSE Handbook and associated European, British and Railway standards.

  • Experience in development of Systems Engineering Management Plans and Technical Assurance Cases.

  • Knowledge of EMC/EMI, systems safety, RAM and/or human factors or other technical skillset desirable but not essential.

Primary Duties:

To lead systems engineering workstreams, covering the whole railway infrastructure.

To supervise and carry out a full range of systems engineering activities within project teams.

This may include development of SEMPs, architecture schematics, requirements management, configuration management, validation & verification, and systems integration/interface management.

When required, to undertake the roles of Contractors Responsible Engineer, Task Manager, Designer, Checker or Approver.

To supervise and check the work of less experienced staff and to support their professional development.

To support bid activities.

Level of Competence:

Competent to work unsupervised and to supervise others;

Competent to check and approve the work of others;

Competent to sign off design certificates on behalf of the company.

Location: The position is office based, but may require visits to clients, suppliers, third parties and work sites as required.

Role and Responsibilities:

Conceptual outline and detailed design of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options.

Preparation, checking and/or approval of feasibility studies, outline and detailed design technical reports and other written documents.

Focus across the system lifecycle of a project that includes:

  • Requirements capture, development and management (DOORS)

  • Systems Architecture

  • Configuration Management

  • Interface Management

  • Configuration Management

  • System Design and design assessment

  • System Verification planning and assessment

  • System Validation planning and assessment

  • Reliability Availability Maintainability Safety (RAMS) assessment

  • Risk Assessment (both technical and project)

  • EMC Production and approval of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents, including Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) and Systems Definition.

  • Production of Interface Management Plan

  • Production of System Architecture

  • Requirements Capture

  • Configuration Control

  • Management of teams of engineers and external suppliers.

  • Delivery of work to programme, budget and specification.

  • Training and development, mentoring of junior staff.

  • Planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances.

  • Client and third party liaison.

Establishment of internal design standards and/or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.

Contributing to long term technical development of the office by application of new techniques, procedures and practices.

Representing the company on technical matters.

To play a key role in recruitment and the continued expansion and development of the team.



  • BEng/MEng or equivalent

  • CEng or equivalent

  • Membership of a relevant professional society such as INCOSE or IET.

  • A working knowledge of EN50126.

  • The Jobholder should be thoroughly conversant with the use of MS Office suite and an understanding of the development of Spread sheets.


  • ASEP/CSEP/ESP Certification preferred

  • Working knowledge of other European, British and Railway standards.

  • Experience in the use of requirement toolsets such as DOORS.

  • Experience in Railway Safety Case requirements.

  • Project Management software is desirable but not essential (P3, Suretrack or MS Project).
